It’s time for the spring harvest. It’s the 1930s and it’s a hard time for small town workers in the Midwest. But there’s reason to celebrate. Laurie Moss is about to graduate from high school and is eager for the graduation dance party and she just may be in love with Martin, an itinerant worker, who, with Top, help out on the Moss farm.

But are they the same two folk who frightened a neighbor’s daughter? Either way, will Laurie and Martin elope? Copland was inspired to write the opera after viewing Walker Evans’ Depression-era photographs and reading James Agee’s Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. Timely, and beautiful, the show will remain with you long after the last note has been played.
